In our last lesson we listened to the song "Teach me to walk in the Light." Lets listen to this song again.

Do you want to learn to walk in Jesus Light? Who teaches you to follow Jesus?

Jesus had a Mother and Joseph to care for him.

Show the children the picture of Jesus and His mother. Point to Jesus and tell the children that this is a picture of Jesus when He was a child. Point to Mary and say that this is Jesus’s mother. Explain that Jesus had a loving family who took good care of Him when He was small, and He loved His family very much.

When you were little your mom helped you swing. You asked her for help, and waited until she could help you. She lifted you up onto the swing, she then gently pushed you back and forth so you could swing.

Now that you are bigger you do not need to wait for your mother to help you swing, you can get on the swing by yourselves, and you can swing as high or as fast as you want. This is because you are learning and growing everyday. Your mother helped you learn to swing by helping you swing when you were younger.

How does your father/ mother help you? What are some things your father/ mother teach you? In what way is your life blessed by your father/mother?

Activity: Lead me Guide me

Prepare: Go outside and get your garden hose, take it and form a path with it that sways or curves. Find a good blind fold for the kids.

Instructions: Blindfold your child and direct them around the garden hose path.

Conclusion: I knew where the hose path was because I had seen it before you, and because I could see it now. You could not see the path, and needed to listen to me if you wanted to follow me. Like the hose path, your mother and father teach you, and guide you, to help you follow Jesus.

As your parents we love you very much We know it is important to teach you to be like Jesus. We know that learning to be like Jesus will help make you happy. We teach you to obey, to listen, to share, to work hard, to read your scriptures, to pray, to help, to say I am sorry, because these things help you become more like Jesus.

What is a sunbeam:
A sunbeam is a small piece of energy, light and heat from the sun. This energy, light and heat helps us here on earth. Even though the sun is not here on the earth we can feel its warmth, see its light, and use its energy every day. When we see sunbeams, and feel their warmth, we are reminded of all the good the sun gives us, the sunbeams help us know more about the sun.

Sharing Time: Let Your Light Shine October 1999

Jesus Christ taught those who followed Him that they were “the light of the world.” He said that you don’t light candles and put them under baskets. When you light a candle, you put it on a candlestick so that it gives light to everyone in the room. He told us, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” (See Matt. 5:14–16.)

What does that mean? It means that if you are a good example, if you “let your light shine,” then when other people see your good example, they will know that you love Heavenly Father and they, too, will want to honor Him.

How can you let your light shine? One way is by keeping the commandments and choosing the right. When we are honest, when we keep the Sabbath holy, when we are kind, we are letting our lights shine. When we obey the Word of Wisdom, when we dress modestly, when we use the names of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ reverently, we are letting our lights shine. Each small light makes a big difference!

There is another way we can let our lights shine. Elder Henry B. Eyring’s friends call him “Hal.” He told a story in general conference about a friend he once worked with. His friend was a good person who loved his family. Elder Eyring never told his friend about the gospel and how families can be together forever. One day, he heard that his friend had died. Elder Eyring said that he sometimes wonders if he will meet his friend in heaven and his friend will say, “Hal, you knew—why didn’t you tell me?” Now Elder Eyring shares his testimony with people all over the world. When we share what we know about the gospel with others, we are letting our lights shine.

We can be good examples. We can share our testimonies with others. We can be missionaries now and invite our friends to Primary and to Primary activities. Blessings will come to others and our faith in Jesus Christ will grow when we let our lights shine.

Discussion: How can you let your light shine?

Activity: Let Your Light Shine Puzzle

Instructions: To make a double-puzzle family home evening game, mount page 36 on heavy paper. Fold in half on the vertical straight line, and glue the backs together. When the glue is dry, cut out the puzzle pieces on the heavy lines and put them into a small container. Have a family member take a puzzle piece from the container and pantomime (act out without using words or noises) what is shown on the small-picture side of it that we can do to share the gospel. Let others guess what it is, then show the picture and post the puzzle piece, candle-side up. Repeat till the puzzle is finished. Remember, each good thing we do helps our light shine.

We have been memorising the most important part of this verse. This verse is actually longer then what we have been memorising. The full verse goes...
1 Thessalonians 5:5 Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
Daytime is a very important time, this is the time of the day for us to work, serve, help, learn, teach, play and live. All the good things we do in life are to happen during the daytime. The night is the time for us to sleep. While we sleep our bodies grow and recharge. We should not play at night and sleep during the day, our bodies and our spirits were not made that way. We need to sleep good at night so we will have energy during the day. We need to wake up early in the morning so that we can get allot done during the day. If we do this our bodies will be healthier, and our spirits will be happier.

D&C 88: 124 retire to thy bed early, that ye may not be weary; arise early, that your bodies and your minds may be invigorated.

The sun tells us what time it is. In the morning the sun starts out low in the sky in the east and slowly rises up higher into the sky as the day goes on. By noon the sun is at its highest point in the sky, making that the brightest part of the day. In the afternoon the sun starts slowly falling lower in the sky.

In the evening we can have lovely sunsets as the suns light is low in the sky. When the sun moves through the sky it helps us see time move also.

At night the moon comes out and travels through the sky like the sun. The stars can been seen sparkling at night also. The moon and the stars give us a little bit of light at night to see by. We should sleep when it is dark outside and be awake when it is light outside. In this way we can be children of the day and not of the night.

"we are not of the night, nor of darkness," is the new part of our scripture. Darkness in this scripture means "wickedness or evil: Satan, the prince of darkness."

This photo is used in our scripture to represent light because it shows more then one of the meaning of the word light. The word light has many meanings. In the 1828 Dictionary light means: day, life, knowledge, God, Jesus, joy, prosperity, happiness, and comfort.

We have talked about what it means to be children of the day. What do you think each of these other statements below mean.

You are children of life.
You are children of knowledge.
You are children of God.
You are children of joy.
You are children of prosperity ( which means: advance or gain in any thing good or desirable; successful progress in any business or enterprise.)
You are children of happiness.
You are children of comfort.

Discussion: Have you ever been just a little bit afraid of the dark? Have you ever been in a place that was so dark that you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face, even with your eyes wide open? If you’ve ever been afraid of the dark, or been in a deep, dark cave, then you know how welcome a ray of light can be. Even a small light makes a big difference in a dark place.

As Children of the Light we can shine our knowledge, joy, happiness and comfort into other peoples lives. In this way we are Gods hands and help other people see the knowledge, joy, happiness and prosperity that comes from knowing God. As we live a life of righteousness we bless others and help them learn more about Jesus and God.

The Lords creations are beautiful.T When we look at his creations like the sun, we feel happy and inspired. His creations reminds us that the he made this earth for us. In the Lords creations we can see his love for us. From the beauty of the earth and skies we can see that the Lord wants us to be happy and enjoy our life here on the earth. This beauty not only brings us joy, but also reminds us to create and give like the Lord does. Jesus' gifts reminds us to be grateful for all he has given us.

The Lord helped make the sun. This is a very important gift he has given us. Not only does the sun keep us warm, grow our food, and give us light it also gives our earth life. The sun gives allot of service to the earth. In this lesson we will learn some of the many ways the sun serves us.

The sun makes the seasons. The earth spins and rotates arround the sun. As it does this each side of the earth takes a turn getting the most light and warmth from the sun. This rotating is what creates the seasons on the earth. In the summertime our side of the earth is the closest to the sun, so we get the most heat and warmth from the sun, this is why it can get so hot in the summer. While we are having summer the other side of the earth is farther away from the sun so they have winter. Being far away from the sun causes that side of the earth to cool down and freeze. The sun shares turns of summer and winter with different parts of the earth. When the earth rotates half way arround the sun our side of earth moves from summer to winter, because it is our turn to be further from the sun. In this way we get to experience the full spectrum of weather, Summer, Winter, and the two inbetween seasons of spring and fall.

In the spring time our home slowly changes from winter to summer. All that was frozen and cold starts to warm up and wake up. Because of this new plants come to life and new baby animals are born. In the fall our home changes slowly from summer to winter. In the summer plants and animals are busy using the sons energy to grow larger. All that was hot starts to cool off and eventually freezes. Because of this the leaves and plants start to change colors from green to yellow, orange, red and then brown. The leaves change color because they are done with their season, they start to dye and eventually fall off. The plants are done growing and creating food, becuse of this fall is time to harvest much of the yummy food that has grown in the summer. With all the leaves fallen to the ground the trees are now ready for the winter. Snow starts to fall to create a new type of beauty, covering the land in sparkeling white. Large trees sleep through the winter getting ready for the summer when they can grow new leaves again.

The sun makes the rain. The sun sends out allot of heat, this heat helps the earth in many ways. The sun warms the water on the earth and makes rain. When the sunrays hit the water they cause it to get hot. Each little water molucule starts to dance and jump when it is hot. Sometimes the water molucules can get so hot and so jumpy that they jump right up into the sky and become a gas. These water molucles group together up in the sky and form clouds. When the air cools the water molucles calm down and start moving slower. This causes the cool water molucles to fall, pouring out of the clouds in the form of rain. Because of rain the water from the ocean can be spread all over the land. Rain helps plants and flowers grow, and helps wash many things clean.

The sun makes the wind and the waves. The heat from the sun also warms the air arround the earth and the ground of the earth. As the sun warms air it gets lighter and floats up. Eventually that warm air cools and falls back to the earth, this riseing and falling action of air creates wind. The wind moves clouds arround the sky, gives us a cool breeze, and helps turn windmills. When the wind hits water it pushes the water infront of it, if the wind is large enough it can cause some beautiful waves.

In this picture below you can see the wind pushing the parachute and the sail in front of it. Also the wind is pushing the water and causing waves. These men are using the power of the wind to wind surf and water parachute to ride the oceans waves.

The sun makes rainbows. After rainfall there is allot more water on the ground, there is also more water in the air. All the extra water in the air helps make a rainbow in the sky. When sunbeam hits water the water seperates out the sunshine into a rainbow of light. A rainbow is a spectrum of the different colors of light the sunbeam has inside of it. We can enjoy all the colors of light in the sunshine individually because of the wonderful way water seperates the colors of light.

Activity: You can make your own rainbow in your own garden.
Items needed: hose, tap, sun light, open outdoor area
Instructions: First of all find an open outdoor area, preferably a garden with a tap, at around noon. Connect the hose with the tap. Turn the tap on and face your back towards the sun. You will see a so called rainbow which uses the same concept as a real one.

The sun gives us allot of gifts. All of these gifts are important to the earth. The sun helps the earth have seasons, wind, rain, rainbows, and many other things. I am thankful for all the gifts the sun gives to me

I know you have allot of ways you can help and give to others. I know that when you service you earn happiness back. I know that giving, helping others, and service are important. What is a Sunbeam?

A Sunbeam is a beam or ray of sunlight. Look at the picture below, see how the sun light comes through the trees in lines, those are sunbeams.

Jesus Wants you for a Sunbeam to shine for him each day. When you shine for Jesus you show the world all the good things about you.

John 8: 12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

What is it like to walk in darkness? What is it like to walk in the light? When we follow Jesus Christ we have his light in our lives, this helps guide and direct us.

Activity: Walking in Darkness

1. Go to a dark room in the house. Turn off all the lights. Or blind fold the kids. Have the children walk from one end of the dark room to the other towards a goal.

Or Before the kids come into the room, place several items partly in view, in your bathroom, closet, or another room without a window. Go inside of the dark room together and turn off the lights. Ask you children to find the objects for you in the darkness.

2. Now repeat the activity again, this time flash the light on for a few seconds every now and again, so your kids can see if they catch a glimps of the object.

3. Repeat the activity again, this time with the lights on.

Discussion:

1. What was it like to look for the object in the dark? Did you trip or bump into things? Were you scared? How long did it take you to find it?

2. What was it like when the light flashed on for a quick moment? Did it help you find your object faster? Why?

3. Did you feel different when the light was on at the end, then when you were in the dark? Which time was easiest to find the object? Why do you think that is?

Lesson: The light helped guide you and show you the way to find the object you were looking for. Jesus Christ is our guide and our light. When we do not follow Jesus we stumble, it can be frightening, we fall and do not know the way towards eternal life. When we follow Jesus, and walk in his light, he leads us to eternal happiness.
